Our first concert by the Harrow Concert Band was brought forward to 31 May to coincide with the annual Mayor’s Bowls match at Harrow Bowls Club and we were privileged to have the Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Eric Silver and the Mayoress Mrs Evelyn Silver as our guests. They were given a guided tour of the ‘Rec’ by Mic and some committee members and greatly enjoyed their visit.
The two jazz concerts featured Ian Brameld and his Dixieland Jazz on July 5th and Shades of Blue on August 2nd and both were excellent – these bands get better each year. Whilst attendances have not been as good as we would like, on average a hundred or so people enjoy the performances and have a cup of tea and snack, and it certainly livens up the park on a Sunday afternoon. The 2009 ‘RecFest’, our performing arts day in the park, was also a success. It was organised as ever by Lawrence Mathias and featured poetry and music from a variety of local performers. These included the Herga Folk Club, soloists from Harrow Young Musicians, sitar, tabla and acoustic guitar performances as well as art and craft workshops, face painting, and a bookstall. Chris Tutton was the compere and delicious refreshments were of course provided by Lilian and her team of helpers – a perfect way to spend an afternoon in our lovely park.
